During this training participant will explore the effects of cancer on patients and survivors where these effects are always complex and subtle and can be interpreted from two perspectives: time and function. Patients’ and survivors’ long interactions with cancer are roughly divided into multiple stages: pre-diagnosis, post-diagnosis before treatment, short-term after treatment, and long-term after treatment.
Different stages entail different problems and demands. Regarding the functional domains, cancer results in challenges at the individual level, such as somatic problems, psychological distress, and questioning about spirit and existentialism and at the interpersonal and social levels, such as the deterioration of social functioning and relationships

By the end of this training participant should be able to:

  1. Acquire knowledge concerning psychiatric disorders associated with cancer in children.
  2. Gain understanding of management plans within the field of psych oncology.
  3. Develop assessment skills for evaluating children with cancer and their families.
  4. Attain knowledge regarding palliative and end-of-life care specific to children.
  5. Learn how to effectively handle psychiatric emergencies, including agitation, self-harm, or suicide, in the context of pediatric oncology.
