This course is 5 days’ crash bullet introductory course for non- coding researchers. The dynamic 5-days course is designed to equip researchers with the essential R coding skills to start with.

  1. Introduction to R
  2. Simple walk around R program and how to use it for beginners.
  3. What is R, reason to use it, packages for R, Installation, loading data and play around. Mathematical operations, Expressions, Logical values, Variables, Functions, Basic data types, Dealing with NA, finding appropriate functionality and exploring your mistakes.

2. Biostatistics with R

  • Choosing your appropriate test and interpretate the data in a professional manner.
  • Descriptive statistics, Dealing with outliers, Normality tests (Shapiro-Wilks, Kolmogrov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling).
  • Frequency and contingency tabulation (Cross tabulation), Test of independence (Chi- Square, Fisher exact test, Cochran Mantel Haenzel test) in brief.
  • T test (dependent and independent), Pair wise T test, Mann-Whitneys U test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, ANOVA, Kruskal- Wallis, Friedman test, Post hoc test example (Tukey’s) in brief.

3. Basic graphics with R

  • This course enables you to learn how to draw basic graphics for your research using the base built in graphics package in R.
  • Line chart, Bar chart, Histogram, Box and Whiskers, combining graphics, Scatter plot matrix.
  • No ggplot2 approach will be presented in this bullet.

4.Correlation and data wrangling with R

  • Understand how to correlate variables (Pearson, Spearman, Kendall)
  • Manipulating large data input in a professional way. Unlike spreadsheet (excel) avoid errors and save time by using automated coding.

1. All courses require laptop availability with prior preparation and installation

  • Evaluation and grading (terms and condition)
  • Final grades are based on attendance (30 points) and final exam (70 points).
  • An open book final exam will be applied.
  • (30 points) for all 5 days’ attendance, (15 points) missing 1 day and attending the rest. (0 points) for missing more than 1 day.
  • Final exam: a real-life data set will be presented to you. A set of questions raised will be asked. How to answer? What test? What presentation? Its  your!.
  • Grading breakdown:
PointsEvaluation status
90-100 pointExcellent performance
80-89Good performance
70-79Satisfactory performance
Below 70Needs improvement
  • This grading system emphasizes both the commitment to attending the course and the practical and theoretical understanding of R, ensuring a fair and balanced evaluation.
  • Certification: All attendance will be provided with a certification for course completion. The certification is sealed from CCHE-57357 continues education department and BioNet Misr (the official bioinformatics community in Egypt).
